International

Cleveland District State High School community has now been hosting international students for over ten years. The program has grown from just one or two visiting students a year to a large and diverse group every year comprised of students from Asia, Europe and Latin America. Currently there are 20 International Students studying at Cleveland High. Some are here on long-term stays and intend to continue tertiary education at an Australian university, while others are here for shorter cultural visits.

Some students visit our school only briefly – study tours for short periods between 2 days and three weeks. This year, we will host groups from Japan, Taiwan and China. We have also hosted delegations of visiting educators from China, Japan, Indonesia and Paraguay.

Many international students are attracted by the wide range of subject offerings. As well as the usual mainstream subjects, students are able to choose to study areas such as Film, Dance or Agriculture as well as a wide range of Certificate courses in music industry, visual arts, business, hospitality, football, volleyball and agriculture. The school’s language program offers Japanese, Chinese and French.

Cleveland District State High School is centrally located with access to the Brisbane CBD, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and beautiful North Stradbroke Island.  The International Student Program aims to provide students with the best experience possible. To that end, several excursions are planned each semester. Trips include visits to Lone Pine and North Stradbroke Island Surf School, with the highlight being the Cairns Adventure, complete with visits to the Crocodile farm, the crater lakes, Port Douglas, Kuranda and the Great Barrier Reef.

International students contribute to classroom discussion from a unique standpoint, broadening the perceptions of domestic students. They offer firsthand information about other cultures and countries previously gleaned only from textbooks or electronic media. The exchange of knowledge and opinions which occurs between domestic students and international students is a powerful one. What is more, it is a lot of fun.

On the sporting field, international students participate with enthusiasm and many have represented the school in competition at a high level. Our coaches look forward eagerly to each new cohort of visitors.

The school community, especially future school leaders and students of Japanese and Chinese, guided by their teachers, Amanda Courtney and Jing Lee, excelled themselves as friendly and welcoming hosts. Cleveland District State High School has earned a reputation as a friendly and welcoming school.

We hope the International Student Program continues to expand and will take every opportunity to nurture it and provide the best possible international experience for all involved. The success of this program indicates a healthy progression towards a truly global community.
