Touch Football Triumph In GBS Finals PDF Print E-mail
Cleveland District State High School triumphed in their two touch football games at the GBS finals.
Our senior girls defeated Wynnum North SHS 10-2 completing their season undefeated and having the highest for and against in the history of the competition. The girls opened the scoring  within the first minutes of the game and maintained the momentum from there. Coach Soldatenko gave the girls a very easy game plan - score three tries by half time. This was achieved and then exceeded with the girls going into the second half leading five to one.   The second half followed suit and the girls doubled their half time lead to end the season being undefeated in 2 seasons of GBS competition.
The middle boys seemed to play above themselves. Each member followed Mr David Neagle’s game plan of tight defence and fast rucking. This formula seemed to be the key for success. After both teams scored in the first minute of play it began to look as though it would be a see-sawing type of game. However, Cleveland’s Captain Norton Kelly- Boxall took over the game and made it his own, scoring three times himself and setting up another two.  The boys were leading at half time four to two, but blew the game apart with some exceptional teamwork to race away, winning 11 to 6.
It was almost three in a row with our senior girls basketballers putting in a great effort in an up and down game where no team could get any advantage on the scoreboard. However it was Kenmore who sunk a crucial basket in the last 45 seconds to draw away and sink the hopes of our girls.  Last gasp fouls shots to Cleveland failed to bridge the gap in an agonising finish to a great game The previous encounter of the two teams ended in a draw and a game that went into extra time would have been a fitting end to this game.   It was not be with our girls going down 32- 30.
Congratulations to all Cleveland teams for a very successful season.
GBS Sport returns in Term 2 with Badminton and in Term 3 with Football, Netball an Volleyball.
