Strong start at home by Cleveland in GBS sport
Cleveland High started the Greater Brisbane Schools Sports winter season in fine style with comfortable victories over Macgregor in volleyball and soccer.
Middle school boys volleyball served strongly and attacked cleanly from the start never allowing the opposition to settle as they raced to a 3-0 victory with Kieran Edmunds and Jordan Pullen Cleveland’s best. Open boys also won 3-0. Scott Commadeur and Luke Atkins led the way forcing the opposition into errors with strong serving.
Both girls soccer teams were dominant from the start. The open team created a number of early chances which were not converted before settling into their rhythm and winning 6-0. An early 2-0 lead with goals from Kyra Spierings and Alana Irving was followed by some complacency by the Middle school girls with Macgregor fighting back to 2-2. Cleveland continued to dominate in midfield with Felicity Tennant Cleveland’s best. Goals from Felicity, Danielle Stanley and Jessie Baldwin helped Cleveland to an 8-2 win.
Open Boys started slowly and allowed Macgregor to open up a 1-0 lead. In a close game Cleveland pressed throughout before equalising in the second half. Despite finishing stronger, the boys were unable to convert and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Although they were outplayed from the start the open girls netball team fought hard to the end with Lauren Cantrill and Cloe Ward Cleveland‘s best.
Tougher opposition is expected by traditional rivals Ferny Grove away next week. |
