After a washout in the first round of competition, Cleveland’s senior girls’ basketball team stole their game from Ferny Grove in the second round of the GBS competition with a free-throw basket after the buzzer.
Emily Gielnik was fouled right on full time and with Cleveland trailing by one point her free throw shooting was put under pressure - she scored both to win the game. Cleveland’s win was set up with some great defence by Gesa Waldhewer and Kaya Kappes and some excellent shooting by Kasey Danielsen-Jensen. Our middle boys and senior boys aimed high but were outclassed by much stronger Ferny Grove teams that boasted several state players.
Our Middle boys and both girls Touch teams were too dominant for the Ferny Grove teams. In muddy conditions our teams proved too strong for the visitors. The Senior girls won 10-0, middle boys 9-1 and the middle girls won 13-0. With such dominant attack it was difficult to isolate any standout players, in the junior boys the Kelly- Boxall brothers worked well together and Jye Irwin was excellent in defence. The middle girls ability to ruck the ball up the field with speed and intensity resulted in Ferny Grove’s defence to crack and players like Alana Elisaia and Dakota Jones were able to take advantage and turn it into touchdowns.
Senior Girls left the Ferny Grove team in their wake. Carla Mc Connell dominated the scorecard with four touchdowns and Coach Kerry Soldatenko says in future weeks to watch out for Nicky Jones to be a standout. Ferny Grove never looked like scoring and with defenders like Coby Imber, Kyiah Jones and Natalie Soldatenko it was no wonder why they didn’t cross the line.
Senior boys Touch narrowly lost 7-9. With a few new faces, cohesion in the first half was not the best and too many dropped balls didn’t help. The second half was won by Cleveland but the damage was done in the first half. Vanu Foe was a standout for the team and was instrumental in the second half comeback.
We will be looking forward to building the points tally next week when we travel to Albany Creek. |
