The heat was on for Cleveland in Round 2 matches of GBS Sport this week against MacGregor. Best results came in Touch as the high temperature and strong opposition made it difficult to find wins.
The Senior Girls Touch again dominated and controlled the game with excellent teamwork to win 9:0. Brittany Turnbull led the scoring with 4 tries while Charlotte Patu again did well in another strong team performance. The Yr8&9 girls showed great improvement this week and played extremely well to draw 4 all in an exciting game. Coby Imber was most valuable in a competitive game where the result was determined only in the last minutes.
The Yr8&9 Boys Touch had another strong showing this week, with good combinations and effort in attack. Inconsistent defence allowed the opposition to jump away early. Norton Kelly-Boxall and Chris Sampy were the best as they went down 5:9. The Senior Boys again put in a solid performance but again let down by absent players and turnovers when in good position. They struggled early against strong defence and went down 11:1.
In Basketball the yr 8&9 Girls competed well across the whole court and showed improvement from last week. Amber Luke was always a threat in offence while Kiriloi Ingram grabbed some great rebounds in their 12 point loss. Depleted by injuries, the Senior Girls started slowly but managed to level scores just before half time. The score blew out in the second half as strong defence frustrated many of the Cleveland attacks. Fiona Tay played a consistent game in offence while Kirsty McMaster was strong in defence.
The yr 8&9 Boys played a tough game in the heat and persevered til the very end. Although a large margin in the end they had plenty of opportunities to score but found it difficult to convert their shots into points. Ralph Valencia played a great game at both ends of the court. The senior Boys were very competitive in spirited game. Chris Couch and Alex Tucker had strong games in offence, but inconsistent shooting again let the team down as they went down by 20.
Next week sees Cleveland travel again, this time to Ferny Grove..
