The Cleveland High Senior Girls Touch team completed its dominance of the GBS competition with an emphatic 6:2 win over Wynnum North in Saturday’s final series held at Kenmore.
In a high tempo first half, the attacking speed of Carla McConnell and Deni Sims kept Wynnum North in their own half for long periods and if not for desperate defensive efforts Cleveland could have led by more than 3 at the break. Tamieka Jones and Brittany Turnbull controlled the play well to engineer many opportunities.
The second half saw more opportunities created with slick and evasive play from Kiah Jones and Natalie Soldatenko. Continued strong defence by Caitlin Harris and Amanda Orn enabled Cleveland to keep control of the ball in their attacking half, and then quickly turn defence into attack. Constant attacking pressure found holes in the Wynnum North defence to stretch the lead to 5 and several breakaways went unrewarded after being run down in the last metres. Wynnum finally scored late in the game as tiredness and a few ball handling errors allowed them more time on the attack. Cleveland hit back soon after though with a fine try that sealed the win.
It was an excellent team effort from the girls with all combining their play well, and a good sign for the future with most of the team still able to play next year.
GBS Sport returns in Term 3 with Football, Volleyball and Netball.
