Two Premierships for Cleveland in GBS Sport PDF Print E-mail
Cleveland teams claimed two premierships and two runners up flags in the weekend finals of GBS Sport.
Both Senior Boys Volleyball and Senior Girls Soccer swept all others away in their undefeated seasons while both Junior Soccer teams suffered defeats for the first time for the season to finish as runners up in their divisions.
The Senior Boys Volleyball kept their uneaten record with a powerful display against Macgregor. Strong jump serving and spiking from Lachy Mann set the tone as the Cleveland boys steamed away to win 3:0. Smart setting from Chris Atkins gave Luke Atkins and Nick Edmunds plenty of opportunities to put away crunching spikes from various parts of the net.
The Senior Girls Soccer impressed coach Ryan with their consistent display to keep a clean sheet for the season in winning 6 goals to nil. Emily Gielnik, Pia Kruse and Kaya Kappes shone out in a great all round team effort that kept Ferny Grove on the defensive for the majority of the match.
The Junior Girls agonisingly lost to Albany Creek by the solitary goal in a game that always looked like it would be the closest of the finals. The Cleveland girls were unlucky to go down 1-0 early despite dominating possession. In the second half Cleveland pressed in attack continuously coming agonisingly close with the ball cleared off the line on three occasions and hitting the crossbar as Albany Creek continued to frustrate every effort from the Cleveland girls. The final 1-0 defeat was a disappointing end to what had been a great season for the girls.
The Junior Boys gave their all in their close match with Kenmore only to run out of steam after leading 1 nil at half time. Jamie Wilson was solid at the back as the boys battled on after an equaliser early in the second half, but two Kenmore goals in the last 5 minutes stole the game just as it was looking like going to penalties.
The GBS competition takes a break now till term 1 next year except for the one day Rugby Carnival early in Term 4.
