Big Changes for School Leavers

In 2007, Year 11s will be working towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), a new qualification that will replace the Senior Certificate from 2008 onwards. Another big change is the new law that says you must stay at school until you are 16 or have completed Year 10, whichever comes first. After that, you are also required by law to 'earn' or learn' until you gain a QCE, gain a Certificate III or higher, or turn 17, whichever comes first.

How do I Gain a QCE?

| The QCE is only awarded to students who are eligible for it. To be eligible, students must complete twenty credits of learning over Years 11 and 12. Look at the Table of Credits in the QCE Guide for lists of the types of learning that can contribute towards a QCE, their values and the standards. Students must attain between 12 and 20 credits from completed core courses of study and may gain additional credits for other types of learning, preparatory (max of 4), enrichment (max of 8) and advanced (max of 8). At Cleveland High, you can access part-time apprenticeships and traineeships so that, on completion of Year 12, you will have a nationally recognised vocational qualification (Certificate II or III) and extra credit towards your QCE. School based apprenticeships and traineeships are available in a wide range of areas including hospitality, information technology, hairdressing, aged care, child care, horticulture, office administration, etc. This means you can be working part-time and completing all or some of your qualification while still attending school. Choosing Suitable Subjects

It is important to choose subjects carefully as your decisions may affect the types of occupations you choose in the future, your success at school and your feelings about school. Look up the Subject Offerings web page to find out about the wide range of subjects our school offers. Follow the set of planned steps listed in the relevant Subject Information booklet and consider all of the information carefully. Included are useful sections on choosing what to study, occupations related to subjects, subject categories, subject prerequisites and subject descriptions. If you are still uncertain about the combination of subjects you have chosen, check with the Guidance Officer or any of the many staff available to help.
