Dress Code PDF Print E-mail

Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 Guidelines for a school Dress Code are specified in Chapter 12, Section 360 and penalties for non-compliance are specified in section 361.

Cleveland District State High School’s school community has determined that students at this school will wear a uniform. Uniform is an important factor in developing positive school tone and pride in the school and it is expected that students will wear the uniform and that parents will support the uniform policy by ensuring that their students arrive at school in full school uniform each day. Please note that it is a condition of enrolment at Cleveland District State High School that students wear the uniform as outlined below.

The public face of our school is one of the ways by which the community at large makes its initial judgement of us. We may as individuals feel that this is unfair. While far from being a complete measure of a good school, our public face is an inescapable part of the whole. We believe that our school must have an ordered and attractive public face.

Much time has been wasted in the past in dealing with issues on a day to day basis with respect to uniform and grooming. This detracts teachers and students from their prime purpose i.e. Effective Teaching and Learning. I do not believe it is appropriate to direct energies away from our real business.
On enrolment, all parents are aware of the expectations of our school with respect to uniform and grooming.

These standards are not open to continuous debate at a school level. Parents who feel that a change is appropriate are invited to attend our monthly Parents’ and Citizens’ Association meeting to voice their concerns.

School staff will not enter into debate on these issues.

Uniform
- The school uniform is detailed in the prospectus and is well known to all parents and students. Changing parts of the uniform on the way to school is unacceptable. There has been a practice developed by some parents to write notes providing reasons for students to be out of uniform. This is not an acceptable practice. Students are expected to be in full uniform at all times. Variations, however temporary are to be avoided.
We do provide a second-hand clothing pool and will assist all families where financial problems exist. Parents who have difficulties with providing uniforms should contact the Deputy Principal in charge of their child’s year level (see Homework Diary), myself or our Registrar, Mrs Zagami.

New students must be in complete school uniform

prior to beginning classes.

Day Wear is worn on most school days. Students must wear their Day Wear to and from school and change for Health and Physical Education lessons except for students in Years 8 and 9 who may wear Sports Wear to school on Tuesdays and students in Years 10, 11 and 12 who may wear Sports Wear to school on Wednesdays.

Our school is considered a workplace for staff and students and Education Queensland health and safety requirements must be followed.

Shoes - The only acceptable shoes are polished sealed black leather shoes or polished leather black lace up joggers (no coloured emblems, stripes, laces, etc). Students who do not have the correct footwear will be unable to participate in most subjects. Local shoe suppliers are fully aware of our requirements in this regard and you should not have any difficulty obtaining the correct footwear for your child..

The following variations are NOT acceptable
• Boots
• Stripes or any colouring
• Sandals or partially covered shoes
• Slippers
Our suppliers have been informed of these requirements.

Jewellery – Students may only wear a wristwatch, one pair of small plain silver or gold matching studs in the lower lobe of the ear or sleepers and a medical bracelet or disc if required. All other jewellery breaches workplace health and safety requirements and is not to be worn to school. Pegs, oversize or dangling earrings are not permitted

Visible piercings – Other than one pair of earrings in the lower lobe of the ear visible piercings are not permitted. Student with other piercings such as lip, tongue, eyebrow, additional ear piercings, pegs etc will be required to remove them before coming to school. Failure to follow this policy will result in detention on each occasion. Students with other visible piercings will need to remove the object concerned or will be sent home until they can remove the object.

Hair – Hair that touches or is below the collar must be tied back at all times. Students with long hair may also be required to wear a hair net in some subjects. Students are expected to have a uniform length haircut. Extremes of hairstyle, such as undercuts, layering, ridges, shaved styles, dreadlocks spikes etc, are not acceptable. Hair must also be of a natural colour.

Hats – All students have been presented with a school cap. They are expected to wear this cap at all times when outdoors. It is their responsibility to look after it, to keep it clean and to replace it if lost or unwearable. We are very conscious of the need for sun safety and request your co-operation in this important matter.

Students are subject to school rules of behaviour (and appropriate action for misbehaviour) from the time they leave home for school until they arrive home from school. Apart from the legal position as per the Education Act, I remind you of the public face or our school.

Every child who misbehaves in school uniform lowers the image of our school, and reduces the job prospects of your child.

Our students’ behaviour in public on all school related occasions reflects their own self respect, their regard for the school community and our values as well as their regard for the needs and rights of others.

I ask parents for their support in assisting their students to purchase appropriately sized uniforms. There has been a growing trend for some male students to purchase oversize shirts and shorts and to wear their shorts in an obscene manner. There has also been a growing trend for some female students to purchase skirts/culottes and blouses that are too small and to wear these in a manner that could also be considered sexual harassment. This will not be tolerated. These students will face the possibility of suspension. Oversize shirts that extend in some instances down to their knees are unacceptable. Blouses and skirts/culottes that do not fully cover the midriff are unacceptable.

We require that our uniform, both clothing and grooming, continue to be of a high standard. I request your support in this matter. Please stress the importance of personal appearance to your son or daughter. We will support you in ensuring that all students meet the standards that you as parents have set.
