Cleveland District State High School promotes the all-round development of students by providing a wide range of academic, cultural and sporting opportunities.
Middle School
The school is a recognised leader in Middle Schooling and has strong ties with Primary Schools in the shire. The emphasis in the Middle School is on student engagement, the building of strong relationships and laying the foundations for life-long learning.
Our aim is for students to feel safe, welcome and successful in their new high school environment and the smooth transition from primary to secondary school is seen as a priority.
Middle School Curriculum
The Year 8 curriculum has been designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to experience a wide range of subjects in a caring and supportive environment. Year 8 classes spend approximately half of their time with their two core teachers. The school offers a number of extension classes (and scholarships) - Academic, Music and Sport.
All Year 8 students study the following: HUMS (English and SOSE), CAMS (Combined Agriculture, Maths and Science), Health and Physical Education, LOTE (French or Japanese), Home Economics, Manual Arts, Music, Art.
All Year 9 students study eight subjects. In order to keep their future options open, all students study five core subjects and then select three elective subjects.
Core Subjects include: English, Maths, Science or Agricultural Science, SOSE, Health and Physical Education.
Elective Subjects include: Agricultural Mechanics, Animal Husbandry, Art, Business Computing, Business Principles, Craft, Dance, Graphics, History, Home Economics, French, Japanese, Music, Music in Practice, Practical Cookery, Science Research and Technology, Speech and Drama, Technology Wood, Technology Metal, Elective subjects are studied for four lessons each week during Year 9.
Year 10
Year 10 is seen as a transition to senior year and students are offered further elective options within core subject areas. Elective subjects drop from three to two and are studied for six lessons each week.
Senior School
A wide range of academic and vocational subjects are offered to students in the senior years (Years 11 and 12). `Senior students work a flexible timetable (four day week). Students may undertake University study, TAFE programs, School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships or private study on their options day.
Subjects which contribute to an Overall Position (OP) include: Accounting, Agricultural Science, Ancient History, Biology, Business Communication and Technologies, Chemistry, Dance, Drama, Economics, English, Film and Television & New Media, Geography, Graphics, Health Education, Home Economics, French, Japanese, Information Processing Technology, Legal Studies, Maths A, Maths B, Maths C, Modern History, Multi-Strand Science, Music, Music Extension, Physics, Physical Education, Visual Art.
Subjects that contribute to a rank (Non-OP) include: Advanced Soccer Principles, Cert I in Engineering, Cert I in Furnishing, Cert II in Hospitality, Cert I & II in Info Technology, Cert I & II in Live Production, Theatre & Events, Cert II Music Industry Foundation, Cert I in Rural Operations, Cert II in Tourism, Cert II in Visual Arts & Contemporary Craft, Cert II in Workplace Practices, English Communication, Instrumental Music, Physical Recreation, Practical Art (Computer Imaging), Prevocational Maths.
